Phill Matthews, MIA, MLW, SPA
Rock-climbing & mountaineering for over 25 years, Phill has spent much of his time playing on the rock & teaching rock-climbing on the sea cliffs around Cornwall’s wonderful coastline, as well as exploring the lesser known crags hidden throughout the county.
Phill is a fully qualified professional Mountaineering Instructor, who holds the MIA (Mountain Instructor Award) and MLW (Mountain Leader Winter) and is a full member of the AMI (Association of Mountaineering Instructors) and a course provider for MTE (Mountain Training England).
Phill is also an active member of Cornwall Search and Rescue Team, specialising in cliff and cave rescue.
He’s well known for his bad jokes and insight into philosophy “YOU’RE NOT AS GREEN AS YOU’RE CABBAGE LOOKING.”
Ziva is the heart of our team, here at Climbing Cornwall. She has a full body wag and gives lots of cuddles. Ziva is at home scrambling on the rock, swimming in the sea and guarding everyone’s lunch bag!
When you phone Climbing Cornwall, there is every chance you’ll find yourself speaking to Jan at the other end!
Occasionally partial to the odd climb on the local crags, Jan is much more at home strolling across the moors.
Faye Shepherd, SPA
When Phill isn’t fixing her car, Faye can be found working on many of our courses. As a Rock Climbing Instructor, Faye often takes small groups and families climbing at our favourite single pitch venues.
Faye is a keen climber, cyclist and outdoor enthusiast, who is also a member of Cornwall Search and Rescue Team. She enjoys nothing more than punishing herself with crazy challenges; In 2014 she summited Mt Kilimanjaro, in 2015 she cycled the length of New Zealand solo, and from 2016-17 she cycled 5,500 miles through the Andes. To see what Faye’s up to now, you can follow her here.
